THE CENTER FOR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA (CIN)

CIN is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to helping the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina understand what is happening in their country. Its goal is to give citizens the information they need to make informed decisions in a participatory democracy. A founding mission is to hold government and government officials accountable and to promote transparency through improving free access to information. It is Bosnia’s most respected news organization and it remains a rare, truly independent media voice demanding accountability and transparency in government. CIN has worked hard to establish the highest local standards for investigative reporting, independence, accuracy and fairness.

ATLATSZO.HU

In July 2011, a Hungarian group of pro-transparency and anti-corruption journalists, lawyers, IT-specialists, academics and other independent experts launched atlatszo.hu (atlatszo means transparent in Hungarian). This online portal for investigative journalism promotes transparency and freedom of information in Hungary. Atlatszo.hu produces investigative reports, accepts information from whistleblowers, files freedom of information requests, and launches freedom of information lawsuits in cases where its requests are refused. Atlatszo.hu is published by Atlatszo.hu Nonprofit Ltd., a Hungarian watchdog NGO founded in June 2011, based in Budapest. The aim of the founders was to launch the first Hungarian watchdog NGO, which produces investigative journalism financed by civil, nonprofit sources.

HETQ ONLINE

Hetq Online is a bilingual (Armenian and English) online newspaper published since 2001 by The Investigative Journalists, an Armenian nongovernmental organization. With more than 200,000 monthly readers in Armenia and abroad, Hetq has established authority and credibility amongst foreign readers. The investigative articles of Hetq Online are republished by leading Armenian media outlets. The Investigative Journalists, publisher of Hetq, is a nongovernmental organization founded in 2000 when 17 journalists from Armenia participated in a one-month course on investigative reporting in the US. Upon their return to Armenia, the group decided to establish this organization with the goals of strengthening and developing investigative journalism, freedom of speech and democratic principles in Armenia.

RISE Project

The RISE Project is a Romanian non-governmental organization of investigative journalists, activists, programmers and graphic designers who use cutting-edge investigation techniques and technology to produce high quality investigative reporting on local and cross-border organized crime and corruption networks. The organization produces investigative articles, visual databases and advanced investigation tools as well as teaching other journalists and the public how to research complex corporate structures used by organized crime and corrupt officials.

BULGARIAN INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM CENTER (BIJC)

The Bulgarian Investigative Journalism Center (BIJC) is a nongovernmental and noncommercial foundation whose main goal is to organize and produce journalistic inquiries into corruption and organized crime. The foundation brings together Bulgarian journalists with experience in investigative journalism.

CENTER FOR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING IN SERBIA (CINS)

The Center for Investigative Reporting in Serbia (CINS), based in Belgrade, is unique organization in Serbia, engaged in investigative reporting with organized crime and corruption as its main focus. CINS works on investigative projects and stories in all spheres of society: education, sport, health, employment, politics, drugs and cigarette smuggling, falsification of documents and medicines, financial fraud and more. It was founded in 2007 by The Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia. Today it is a modern, autonomous and independent news agency whose stories are often republished by local and regional print and electronic media. Major news websites in Serbia publish CINS’s stories and the number of visitors to its website, www.cins.org.rs, is continuously increasing. CINS’s work is available to all media free of charge and can be republished with attribution.

NOVAYA GAZETA, RUSSIA

Novaya Gazeta is a Russian liberal opposition newspaper well known in the country for its critical and investigative coverage of Russian political and social affairs. Four Novaya Gazeta journalists, including Yury Shchekochikhin and Anna Politkovskaya, have been murdered since 2001 in apparent retaliation for their work. It is published in Moscow, in regions within Russia, and in some foreign countries. As of 2009, the print edition is published on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; English articles on the website are published at irregular intervals.

THE KYIV POST, UKRAINE

The Kyiv Post is Ukraine’s leading English-language newspaper. It has developed a reputation for outstanding reporting, independent opinion and world-class journalism. The Kyiv Post played a vital role as one of the few independent media outlets under former President Leonid Kuchma. Over the years, the weekly newspaper has led the charge for a free press in Ukraine, and has played roles in the Georgiy Gongadze scandal, the Orange Revolution and other significant Ukrainian events. It is produced by a team of Western and Ukrainian journalists. Launched in 1995, the newspaper's circulation is 11,000 daily? Weekly? copies.

RE:BALTICA, LATVIA

Re:baltica is a non-profit organization that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. Founded in August 2011, it focuses on in-depth investigations of socially important issues in the Baltic region, such as corruption, crime, finances, entrepreneurship, health and human rights. Re:Baltica’s journalism encourages transparency and reform. It is based in Riga, with journalists and board members from all Baltic states: Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

SCOOP MACEDONIA

SCOOP-Macedonia is a nongovernmental nonprofit organization that aims to promote, support and stimulate investigative journalism. Its purpose is to support journalists in their daily work with financial or professional help, as they work to develop investigative journalism in the country, region, and also globally. The aim of SCOOP-Macedonia is to continue to promote and stimulate the development of investigative journalism in Macedonia and the wider region; to fight organized crime and corruption; to strengthen democratic capacities; and to improve the professional qualities of journalists as well as the democratic atmosphere in Macedonia in general.

MANS, MONTENEGRO

MANS is a non-governmental organization devoted to fighting corruption and organized crime in Montenegro. MANS investigates corruption and organized crime, monitors the implementation of legislation and government policy, provides free legal aid to citizens and civil society organizations, media and businesses, develops law and policy proposals and analysis and conducts advocacy campaigns. MANS’s strategic goals are to combat high level corruption; reduce opportunities for organized crime; increase the transparency of institutions and encourage public participation in fighting corruption and organized crime.

STUDIO MONITORI IN GEORGIA

Studio Monitori is an independent investigative journalism team that produces hard-hitting half-hour documentary news stories every two weeks that are shown in Georgia on the Maestro TV station. Founded in 2005, Monitori is considered the most neutral source for developed news reporting in a country where almost every media outlet ends up taking a pro-government or pro-opposition stance in news coverage. Monitori reporters investigate and report stories regardless of the political affiliations or influence of the subjects. The winner of most major journalism awards in Georgian journalism, Monitori has resisted lucrative television deals that would offer financial independence but would seriously compromise journalistic independence.

LIBERALI MAGAZINE

Liberali is widely considered to be the best-written and best-edited news magazine in Georgia. It’s the best home for independent long-form print investigations in Georgia today. Conceived in 2009, at one time it also produced a lively entertainment magazine and ran a popular radio station. In recent years economic difficulties forced the magazine's owners to give up the entertainment magazine and radio station. As is the trend with print magazines worldwide, Liberali is going to a monthly schedule for its print magazine and concentrating on a content-rich daily website.

ČESKÉ CENTRUM PRO INVESTIGATIVNÍ ŽURNALISTIKU

České centrum pro investigativní žurnalistiku (Czech Center for Investigative Journalism/CCIZ) was founded in 2013 by a group of Czech journalists whose mission is to promote, protect and train investigative journalists, while help local journalists master new media trends and standards. CCIZ is the only national representative for the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project as well as other professional networks. Its members are professional journalists with strong ethical principles, academic qualifications and human rights background. Members of CCIZ developed training modules for independent journalists in authoritarian regimes as well as e-learning modules for training the Czech NGO sector in elements of journalism and media communication.

BIRN KOSOVO

BIRN Kosovo, as part of the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN), is an independent non-governmental organization whose aim is to provide momentum to the democratic transition process, promoting accountability, rule of law and policy reform. BIRN Kosovo’s approach is to combine its projects with those of the regional BIRN Network with a view to long-term sustainability of results and institutions. BIRN Kosovo aims to serve as a watchdog of public institutions, monitoring the work of governing and public institutions and supporting their reform and their path towards meeting the criteria and standards of the European Union.
